Hobsons Bay 360 #15: Solar Power Project

Hobsons Bay City Council is taking the lead in generating renewable energy and stimulating the local economy through the roll out of a Virtual Energy Network including the installation of new solar panels on more than 50 Council buildings. The solar panels have been connected via a Virtual Energy Network, which is an innovative way to share solar electricity across multiple sites.

The large scale Solar Power Project provides substantial financial, environmental and community benefits. It will contribute significantly towards not only Council’s, but also the Victorian Government’s, zero net emissions goals.

We have connected solar panels on over 50 Council buildings, installing 1,700KW of solar. The results have been fantastic so far, with our total annual greenhouse gas reductions, from the solar power infrastructure that Council has installed, measuring 2,500 tonnes!

Some of the projected benefits of this initiative include a reduction in Council’s reliance on non-renewable power, a reduction in greenhouse emissions and year-on-year savings in energy costs redirecting Council’s funds back into community programs.

Mayor-Cr-Jonathon-Marsden.jpg“The Virtual Power initiative is a local government first and is an important element in the Hobsons Bay community’s COVID-19 economic recovery plans. The solar power initiative is well underway and aims to lower electricity costs for the community and supports Council’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2030 for the entire city." - Cr Jonathon Marsden (Strand Ward).
