Become a Friend of the Libraries
The Friends of Altona Libraries, and the Friends of Williamstown and Newport Libraries are non-profit organisations that support and assist the libraries to provide an excellent service to the local community.
Each Friends' group provides assistance to the libraries by raising funds, sponsoring events and activities, and acting as an advocate for the libraries with government and the wider community.
Advantages for members include:
- Invitations to special events and functions
- Book sale previews
- Opportunities to meet and make new friends

Book Sales
Location: Altona Library
The Book Sale Room, entry at rear of Altona Library.
First Tuesday, Friday and Saturday of each month, 10am to 1pm
Book sale dates for 2023
May: Tues 2, Fri 5, Sat 6
June: Fri 2, Sat 3, Tue 6
July: Sat 1, Tue 4, Fri 7
Aug: Tue 1, Fri 4, Sat 5
Sept: Fri 1, Sat 2, Tue 5
Oct: Tue 3, Fri 6, Sat 7
Nov: Fri 3, Sat 4
Dec: Fri 1, Sat 2, Tue 5
There are no sales on public holidays.
Book sale prices:
- All fiction (or as marked) - $2
- All non-fiction (or as marked) - $2
- DVD/Talking Books - $2
- All children, junior, young adults (or as marked) - $1
- Magazines - 4 for $1

Book Sales

The Book Room, enter via Ferguson Street
Cash only.
Every second Saturday. 9.30am to 12.30pm

All money raised is donated to Williamstown and Newport libraries and various charities.
In 2022, donations were made to the following:
- Hobson Bay Council Library - $5,000
- The Indigenous Literacy Foundation Australia - $1000
- Food Bank Victoria - $1000


Book sales contain second hand books donated by the community, as well as library stock taken out of circulation.
