Hobsons Bay 360 #14: Looking after our Heritage sites for future visitors

Hobsons Bay has many heritage assets that form part of its landscape, including fountains, statues, cannons, maritime objects, lamp posts and gates. We are committed to a program of conservation, restoration and interpretation works that will ensure these important objects are maintained and interpreted, so that they can be appreciated by current and future visitors to the city.

An important tool in caring for a heritage building includes a Conservation Management Plan (CMP). A CMP documents what policies are appropriate to enable a maximum level of heritage significance be retained in its future use and development. In Hobsons Bay, CMPs have been prepared by either the Council or the private owner of ten historic buildings in Hobsons Bay. To view the list, click here. In addition, the Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme includes Heritage Overlays throughout the municipality which allows for protections of existing buildings and assets.

If you’re interested in studying areas of heritage or ancestry, why not visits our Heritage Centre at Williamstown Library. Here you will find a specially curated Heritage collection, tools for ancestry research, and access to a large number of records related to local history.

We have incredible cultural and historical assets in Hobsons Bay and it’s important they are given the recognition and protection they deserve. The Newport Railway Workshops have played a crucial role in the growth and development of Melbourne and Victoria. It is one of our state’s hidden gems and we must do all we can to preserve it for future generations.” – Cr Peter Hemphill (Strand Ward).
