The Birds - A Fairy Tale: A Book Reading and Talk by Sally Nansen
Hobsons Bay is an incredible sanctuary for the birds. At Cheetham Wetlands 65,000 migratory waders visit in Summer, including from the Arctic Circle.
Illustrator and book creator, Sally Nansen, creates unique ephemeral publications as curious portals to the past. The Birds - A Fairy Tale is a rare illustrated tale of migratory birds through the eyes of a 19th century child at the point of ecological and social interruption by the Industrial Revolution. Created in response to the present day crisis for migratory birds, this universal tale urges for a renewed covenant with all life. The Birds is an invitation to consider our own layered landscapes and the birds who call for healing and return.
The Birds - A Fairy Tale was part of the Melbourne Art Book Fair (National Gallery of Victoria) in 2023.
The publication and editions of the book's original linocut illustrations will be available for sale at the event.
