Learn to mend and upcycle clothes and textiles at our free Mending in May workshops.

Hand and machine-sewing sessions are available for beginners and the more experienced.

Textile Workshop for Young People: Suitable for all levels aged 13-25

We're running two special ArtLAB sessions for young people aged 13-25 years old. Learn to sew and upcycle textiles with the knowledgeable, patient team from the School of Sewing and Upcycling in a friendly, inclusive environment.

Mend your Knitwear by Hand: Suitable for all levels

Do you have moth holes in your favourite wool scarf? Or worn out elbows on your cosy knit jumper? In this workshop you'll learn to mend and embellish your pre-loved woolly pieces in a fun and creative environment.

When: Wednesday 22 May | 6-8 PM

What we'll cover

  • Mending basics
  • How to prepare your woollens for repair
  • How to colour match wool to repair as invisibly as possible
  • How to add colour to your woollens for a visible repair
  • Different types of darning
  • Needle felting


What to bring

  • Your woollens that have stains, rips or holes that need repairing
  • Fabric, thread or embellishments you may like to add
  • Most importantly, bring your imagination and enthusiasm!

Mending with a Sewing Machine: Basic machine experience desirable

When: Thursday 23 May | 6-8 PM

What we'll cover

  • How to safely operate an electric sewing machine
  • Basic trouble shooting skills
  • How to use the instruction manual and accessories that come with a machine
  • Which machine needles are best used on different fabrics
  • Variety of techniques including:
    • straight stitching
    • zigzag stitching
    • hand sewing
    • basic patching
    • machine applique
    • decorative stitches

Creative Hand Mending & Sashiko Patches: Suitable for all levels

In this workshop, you'll learn practical ways to mend your clothes, plus turn them into unique, wearable works of art with the beautiful art of applying Sashiko patches.
