5 Little Birds & Other Little Things Outside My Doorstep

The exhibition spotlights the small and intriguing wildlife glimpsed in the many sanctuaries around Hobsons Bay – or as the title suggests – 'just outside my doorstep'. 

Observing the three elements essential to the survival of these species in their natural habitat: food, water and shelter, the mixed media works are a collection of collages, photographs and film footage created specifically for the exhibition. Base relief collages of birdlife and wildlife are overlaid on photographs of local habitat as the artist characterises these creatures with colour, texture, gesture, pattern and form, using both recycled and natural materials. 

The images meld into the environment to express the importance of caring, preserving and sustaining local habitat for the diversity of life that inhabit it and for our own wellbeing. 

About the Artist

Observation and immersion in the natural environment are an intrinsic part of local artist Frances Loriente's practice as she seeks to capture unique idiosyncrasies and individual characteristics of her subjects.

Laneway Gallery is an outdoor exhibition space on the exterior walls of Woods Street Arts Space, and is viewable 24 hours a day.
