Why this project is needed

The Williamstown Mechanics Institute is a valued community asset, but the building requires restoration and upgrades to remain safe, functional and fit for purpose. Ageing infrastructure and limitations in accessibility restrict how the space can be used and who can access it.

Without investment, the building’s condition will continue to decline, placing a significant heritage asset at risk and limiting its community value.

What the upgrade will deliver

The project will restore the building’s heritage features while upgrading it to meet modern standards. The project will deliver:

  • Restoration and conservation of heritage elements
  • Upgraded, flexible spaces for community and cultural use
  • Improved accessibility and compliance
  • Modern amenities and building services
  • Enhanced functionality to support a broader range of activities

The case for investment

Preserving cultural heritage: heritage buildings play a vital role in maintaining community identity and connection to place.

Supporting arts and community activity: access to quality community spaces enables arts, learning and social connection.

Protecting a valued asset: early investment in restoration reduces long-term costs and prevents further deterioration.
