Why are some trees being removed?
An independent tree assessment found that several existing trees are in poor condition and have little long-term value. Many of these trees have health or structural issues, are unlikely to survive for much longer, or contribute little to the surrounding landscape.
The assessment also found that some medium- and high-value trees cannot be kept because they are located where construction work for the project needs to take place.
To build the new community facilities, improve open spaces and complete the landscaping works, 45 trees will need to be removed. To replace them, the project will plant 42 advanced trees and 3,342 other plants as part of the landscaping.
How many trees will be removed?
Forty-five low- to medium-value trees identified through the assessment will be removed as part of the project. The project balances these removals with significant new planting and environmental improvements.
When will the works take place?
Works are expected to commence in August 2026 and be completed by February 2027, subject to weather conditions.
Will the reserve remain open during construction?
No. The reserve will be fenced and closed to the public throughout construction to ensure community safety.
When will replacement trees be planted?
Planting is scheduled to take place between April and August 2027, following completion of the main construction works.
Why can’t the existing trees simply be retained?
The reserve upgrades include a new playground, car park, half court, picnic and BBQ area, pathways and associated landscaping. Some existing trees are located within areas required for these new facilities or were assessed as being of low value and would benefit from being replaced. Other trees are unable to be safely retained due to the design and construction. The project has sought to retain suitable vegetation where possible while delivering the planned improvements.
Will access to nearby facilities be affected?
Access to the RSL, including for people of all abilities, will be maintained throughout the project. Traffic flow and parking may be temporarily impacted at times, but traffic management measures will be in place to minimise disruption and maintain safe access.
What other improvements are being delivered as part of the project?
The project will include a new playground featuring a timber play structure, rope bridge, slides, climbing elements, talking tubes and shop counter, as well as natural play features, a bay swing, carousel, trampoline, new car park, half court, picnic and BBQ facilities, and extensive landscaping.
