The community can have its say on two important projects that aim to protect and celebrate the heritage of Hobsons Bay.
Over the next six weeks, people can have their say on the Draft Heritage Strategy and the Draft Local Heritage Policy and Design Guidelines.
Draft Heritage Strategy
Our first heritage strategy, which has been developed following community consultation, provides a framework to help improve how we identify, protect, support, promote and celebrate our heritage.
The strategy includes a 10-year action plan that positions Hobsons Bay as a leader in recognising and celebrating cultural heritage issues by:
embedding truth-telling in heritage management by incorporating First Nations perspectives
taking a people-centred approach to heritage
managing risks to heritage in the context of climate change
developing guidance for balancing housing targets with heritage values
enhancing storytelling using new technologies in installations and events
Draft Local Heritage Policy and Design Guidelines
The updated policy and guidelines explain key heritage principles and concepts, and suggest preferred approaches and expected outcomes for development in heritage overlays to assist Council, property owners/managers, designers and others involved in works and development to heritage places.
The guidelines consolidate five existing out-of-date policies Council’s town planning team currently uses when assessing planning permit applications in heritage overlays. The update will improve efficiency by making the guidelines clearer, easier to use and will also respond to current issues such as climate change.
Two drop-in sessions will be held for anyone wanting to talk to Council officers about either the draft strategy or draft policy and guidelines.

Sunday 9 August, 12pm to 2pm, Commonwealth Reserve (next to the Visitor Information Centre), Williamstown
The draft documents will be open for feedback until Wednesday 19 August at Participate Hobsons Bay.
