Hobsons Bay City Council will once again express support for the LGBTIQA+ community, with various events to mark IDAHOBIT 2026.

IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia) is marked annually on 17 May, and is an opportunity to advocate action for a prejudice-free world, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

As has been the case in previous years, Council will again raise the rainbow flag at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in support of the day and the LGBTIQA+ community.

A flag raising ceremony and community morning tea will take place at the Civic Centre from 10.45am to 11.45am on Friday 15 May.

Friday’s event will also feature guest speakers from businesses listed on Council’s Rainbow Business Directory. They will discuss their various experiences as part of Hobsons Bay’s LGBTIQA+ community, and how they have built inclusive local businesses.

LGBTIQA+ community members and allies are also welcome to attend a community wellbeing panel event at Newport Community Hub on Wednesday 20 May at 6.30pm.

Local LGBTIQA+ community members and experts will share and discuss practical ideas for strengthening wellbeing and social connection in Hobsons Bay, focusing on sharing experiences, perspectives, and approaches to foster social inclusion and community support.

Full details about both events can be found at hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/pride

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Diana Grima:

“Each year IDAHOBIT gives us an opportunity to stand in support of our LGBTIQA+ community, and against division, bigotry and hate.

“Raising the rainbow flag is a way we can say, everyone is welcome here in Hobsons Bay.

“I’d invite LGBTIQA+ people and allies to come along and stand in solidarity for this important occasion.”
