Restoring a Williamstown icon

When I was seeking election to Council nearly two years ago, one of my top initiatives was to advocate for the Williamstown Mechanics Institute.

It has taken us some time, but I’m thrilled to see progress made on this issue.

Dating back to the 1860s, the Williamstown Mechanics Institute is one of the oldest, most historically significant and most treasured historic landmarks in our city.

For too long this icon of Williamstown has sat empty with its future uncertain. That’s why I’m pleased we have taken steps in the right direction to getting this building back to where it needs to be.

I have a deep passion for both the history of Hobsons Bay and Williamstown, and I strongly believe it’s vital we protect and foster the places that tell the story of our community.

Generations of residents have walked through the institute’s doors, and for many locals, it holds fond memories and remains an important gathering place in the heart of Williamstown.

That’s why the proposed restoration is so important. It will help protect the character and significance of the building while improving its functionality and usability for the community.

It’s about respecting our history while ensuring these spaces can continue to be enjoyed and utilised well into the future.

There is a clear passion for this building among our community.

You need only look as far at groups like Save Our Mechanics Institute and Williamstown Historical Society for the advocacy they have done up to this point.

Their hard work has ensured we at Council take steps to preserving this important facility.

This project was also highlighted as a priority in Council’s advocacy plan, recognising the importance of work to be done. The next stage will be completing design works.

I look forward to a time when our community can visit again, listen to stories of the past from the historical society, enjoy a show or performance, and see it return as a vibrant community hub.
