It might not be said enough, that the heartbeat of any strong community are people who go above and beyond for the benefit of us all.
People who are selfless, putting in hours of work often without receiving much in return.
And that’s why I was thrilled for Hobsons Bay’s new Community Recognition Awards to roll out, with the ceremony over this past weekend.
It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the people and groups who make a meaningful difference across our city every day.
The new awards were designed to recognise a range of contributions to Hobsons Bay, with six award categories.
From volunteers and sporting clubs to young leaders and community advocates, the awards highlight the passion, care and commitment that exist right across our municipality.
The Helping Others Award was about recognising those going above and beyond to support others through kindness, mentoring, volunteering and community connection, while the Change Maker Award celebrated leading positive change and championing inclusion, equality and new ideas.
Our Sporting Spirit Award highlighted the great work of sports clubs and leaders, while the Community Strengthening Award recognised those helping build a more connected and inclusive Hobsons Bay.
It was also inspiring to celebrate the next generation of leaders through the Young Leader Award, recognising young people making an impact in our community and the Community Leader Award acknowledging individuals whose dedication and leadership continue to inspire others and create positive change.
I’d like to congratulate not just the winners of the six awards, but all nominees for their ongoing commitment and dedication to our community.
And to our winners, warm congratulations for your recognition, you should be incredibly proud.
The awards also came at a fitting time, following National Volunteer Week, a time to remind us just how important volunteers are to the strength of our community.
Across Hobsons Bay, volunteers support sporting clubs, neighbourhood houses, environmental groups, community events and countless other local initiatives. Their contribution often happens quietly and without recognition, yet it has an enormous impact.
These awards are an important way of saying thank you to the people who give their time, energy and compassion to make Hobsons Bay such a welcoming and vibrant place to live.
