Works and plans to promote Williamstown

The role of local government is a nuanced one.

It’s important for councils to invest in the community through services and infrastructure, while striking the balance of responsible financial management of ratepayer money. 

Over the last few weeks, my councillor colleagues and I have talked about our budget for the next financial year, applying a back-to-basics approach, and how it aims to strike that balance I refer to.  

In my ward of Williamstown, there’s been some terrific work recently done I know the community has been keen to see. 

It was great to have the state government recently approve plans for the Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club, I can’t wait to see further progress to give this important facility a much-needed upgrade. 

I was also thrilled that after several months of repair works, the rotunda at Commonwealth Reserve is open once again. 

This is such a popular and important part of our city, and I’m looking forward to seeing the community enjoying it once again, now able to do so safely thanks to significant repair works. 

While we rightly focus on maintaining and improving what we have, I think it’s also important to think innovatively and creatively of what we can do differently to continue to improve our city. 

At the recent Council meeting, I spoke about a passion project of mine, the revitalisation of Williamstown’s small business environment and the return of the Williamstown Festival. 

I remember the days of the much-loved Willy Fest, and the joy it brought to the whole community.  

While I recognise the challenges in events like these taking place, I think it’s an idea worth exploring to strengthen community connections, celebrate Williamstown’s unique identity, and support local businesses. 

Since mentioning my idea at the last meeting, I’ve received plenty of positive feedback. I think Council, community groups and local businesses can collaborate and look at ways we can make more special memories in Williamstown, and Hobsons Bay, that I was fortunate to enjoy growing up here.
