Have you noticed something different about the monument in Dennis Reserve?

The gas lamp on top of the Maclean Monument in the popular Williamstown reserve has been removed for important conservation works.

The work is being undertaken by Grimwade Conservation Services, known for its skills in restoration and conservation, and aligned with the University of Melbourne.

The project will restore the lamp to working condition, powered by electricity instead of the original gas flame.

The monument is almost 90 years old, having been installed in 1935 to commemorate Dr Hector Rath Maclean, a local resident, founder of Williamstown Hospital, and medical health officer for the municipality for more than 30 years.

At the outbreak of World War I, Dr Maclean joined the Army Medical Corps as a captain, and he served overseas with the Australian Imperial Force.

The obelisk was erected at a cost of £300, which was paid for by residents.

The lamp will be returned to the site once restoration works are completed.
