Council monitoring Altona Beach erosion
Published on 04 June 2025
Council has been monitoring the recent beach erosion in Altona caused by Laverton Creek.
It is collaborating with the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria to further investigate.
The seawall has been reviewed by a marine engineer and is structurally sound. Temporary fencing has been placed around the seawall as a precaution and to prevent access to the seawall edge.
Council is carrying out further coastal assessment studies to better understand the impacts of continued sand accumulation and the impacts on the Laverton Creek estuary and beach system.
These studies will guide future management strategies to address the ongoing beach erosion issues.
The area will continue to be monitored by Council officers and DEECA, Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria, who share responsibility for ongoing management.
