Seed Library
Located at the Altona Library, the Hobsons Bay Seed Library aims to encourage the community to grow and save their own seeds, to be returned at the end of the season.
The seeds in the Seed Library are all open pollinated and grow well in Hobsons Bay. By growing, saving and sharing these plants, you are helping preserve our seed heritage and biodiversity for future generations.
We hope they inspire you to grow something new!
How does the seed library work?
Borrowing a seed packet works just like borrowing a book.
That way, we can ensure seeds are returned by the end of the season. After signing up, Seed Library members can borrow one seed packet per month. You can borrow extra seed packets for any that you donate.
By signing up to the Seed Library, you are making a commitment to return some seeds to the library at the end of the season. It is important to take this commitment seriously as the Seed Library cannot continue if stock is not replaced.
I don’t know how to grow or save seeds!
We’re here to help! My Smart Garden is a free sustainable gardening education program that will help you grow food, shelter your home from the sun and wind, create homes for native plants and animals, use water wisely and reduce waste.
How do I get involved?
This seed library is managed by people like you for the Hobsons Bay gardening community. Feel free to spread the word, organise these shelves and arrange seed swapping get-togethers. Portable seed libraries are available for loan to community events.
