Altona Green Primary School Road Safety Project

Victoria Street Altona Green Primary School

Council was contacted by Altona Green Primary School regarding road safety and speeding concerns near the school and the risks to school children. Traffic surveys confirmed high speeds on Victoria Street, including during school peak times.

As a result, Council advocated for funding and has been successful in obtaining state and federal government support for a project to improve road and school children safety. The project involves:

  • a new raised crossing at the school’s second gate to the east of the existing children’s crossing
  • a raised platform near the bus stop to the west of the existing children’s crossing
  • replacement of the existing rubber speed cushions at the Sommers Drive roundabout with speed cushions in asphalt
  • traffic and pedestrian refuge islands at Victoria Street’s intersections with Tatman Drive, Batman Street and Featherby Way

The delivery of the project is supported by the Altona Green Primary School and it will increase safety of school children through reduced vehicles speeds near the school. The treatments will also improve access and amenity for locals walking in the area.
