School holiday activity FAQs
I completed the registration online. Does that mean I’m in?
Not necessarily. Because our school holiday activities are very popular, we use an expression of interest process to ensure access is as equitable as possible. This means that you may not be able to attend every activity you expressed interest in.
Your participation is confirmed once you receive a confirmation email from youth@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au with further details about the activity.
I can’t attend the activity anymore. Can my friend come in my place?
Unfortunately not. Due to the popularity of our programs, there is a waitlist for all school holiday activities. We appreciate you letting us know as soon as possible when you're unable to make an activity you were registered for, so we can offer your spot to the next person.
I want to make sure I can come to the activity with my close friend. How do I do this?
Although we totally get wanting to attend our programs with your friends, unfortunately we can't guarantee this. Please indicate on the expression of interest form that you would like to attend with your friend (and enter friend's name) and we will do our best to coordinate this.
All expressions of interest and registrations for activities need to be completed by the parent/ carer of the young person. We can't accept bookings made by other adults for young people (like your parent for your friend).
I’m not feeling great, can I get picked up early?
Absolutely. If you're not feeling well on a program, please let one of our staff/ youth worker know and we can arrange the best time and place for you to be picked up by your parent/ carer. Unfortunately, we're not able to transport individual young people in our vehicles (if on an excursion).
I don’t have a phone, what if I need to contact my parent?
No problem. All our staff will have mobile phones available that you can use to contact your parent/ carer if needed.
I have a sibling who is 11, can they come too?
Unfortunately not. The school holiday activities run by the Youth Services team are for high school aged young people (12-17 year olds).
What kind of food do you provide?
It depends on the activity. Our snacks usually consist of fruit, muesli bars and popcorn/chips. Lunch on our holiday activities is usually a sandwich or wrap. Please inform of any dietary requirements prior to the activity. If this doesn’t appeal, you are welcome to bring your own snacks and lunch.
What qualifications do staff on programs have?
The team at Youth Services have tertiary qualifications in youth work, social work, community development, alcohol and other drugs, community services, psychology and counselling. In addition, all staff are trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid and Certificate 2 in First Aid.
The YacVic Code of ethics and Victorian Child Safety Standards inform our work with young people.
Who needs a Working with Children Check?
In Victoria, all adults who have contact with people under 18 require a working with children check (WWCC). All Youth Services staff, as well as external contractors and facilitators, must have a WWCC to work with young people at Youth Services.
Young people participating in our programs who are 18 years of age and over, must obtain their own WWCC. Our staff can assist young people with this application, if needed.
Can adults stay during the program?
No. Due to child safety standards, our programs and spaces are youth specific.
At HBYS, we recognise the need for young people to have their own spaces and places to create friendships, be themselves and explore their independence in a safe and supportive space.
If you have a carer/ support worker, please reach out to us so we can chat about how best to support you and the young person in your care.
I feel uncomfortable with my 13 y/o mixing with 25 y/olds. Why is it such a big age range?
At Youth Services, we provide services for all young people aged 12-25 years who live, study, work and recreate in Hobsons Bay. We offer a range of activities across these ages that often target specific age groups (such as 12-17 year olds).
Where ages are mixed, the organisation's child safety standards, policies and procedures support our work.
My child has a disability. Can they participate in your programs?
Absolutely. All young people are welcome to access the programs and services we offer. We encourage you to contact us if your child has specific needs and requirements, to ensure they are able to be accommodated.
