School holiday activity FAQs

I completed the registration online. Does that mean I’m in?

No. Due to the popularity of our activities, we try to make it as equitable as possible. We utilise an expression of interest process to ensure that all of our activities are distributed fairly across the municipality. This means that you may not get in to every activity you registered your interest for, but we try to make it fair for everyone.

Your participation is confirmed in the activity when you receive a confirmation email from youth@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au. Any questions, please reach out to us!

I can’t attend the activity anymore. Can my friend come in my place?

Unfortunately not. Due to the popularity of our programs, we hold a waitlist for all of our school holiday activities. Please let us know as soon as you can if you are unable to make it so we can offer your spot to the next person.

I want to make sure I can come to the activity with my close friends. How do I do this?

There are no guarantees you will be on every program with your friends, but we try our best.

Your parents needs to book you into our programs. We cannot accept bookings made by parents of friends.

I’m not feeling great, can I get picked up early?

Of course! Let a youth worker know and we can arrange the best time and place for collection by a parent. We are unable to transport young people individually, so if we are on an excursion, we will let you know the best spot for collection by a parent /guardian.

I don’t have a phone, what if I need to contact my parent?

No problem. All our Youth Workers have work mobiles you can use to contact your parent if needed.

I have a sibling who is 11, can they come too?

Unfortunately not, our activities are aimed at high school aged young people. No-one who is under 12 can attend our activities.

What kind of food do you provide?

It depends on the activity. Our snacks usually consist of fruit, muesli bars and popcorn/chips. Lunch on our holiday activities is usually a sandwich or wrap. Please inform of any dietary requirements prior to the activity. If this doesn’t appeal, you are welcome to bring your own!

What qualifications do Youth Workers have?

The team at Youth Services have tertiary qualifications in youth work, social work, community development, alcohol and other drugs, community services, psychology and counselling. In addition, the Youth Services team are trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid and Certificate 2 in First Aid. Our team abide by theYacVic Code of ethicsandVictorian Child Safety Standards.

Who needs a Working with Children Check?

All adults who have contact with people under 18 require a working with children check (WWCC). All of our team, including external contractors and facilitators, must have a WWCC to work at Youth Services.

Young people participating in our programs who are 18 and over, must obtain their own WWCC. Youth workers can help apply for one if needed.

Can adults stay during the program?

No. Due to child safety standards, our programs and spaces are youth specific.

At HBYS we recognise the need for young people to have their own spaces and places to create friendships, be themselves and explore their independence in a safe and supportive space.

If you have a carer, please reach out to us so we can chat about how best to support you.

I feel uncomfortable with my 13 y/o mixing with 25 y/olds. Why is it such a big age range?

The definition of “youth” in Victoria is 12-25 years old.

As Youth Services, we service all young people across the municipality, not always at the same time.  We offer activities across the youth age range, some targeted to specific age groups.  We abide by Child safety standards and have policies and procedures to support our work.

My child has a disability; can they participate in your programs?

Absolutely. All young people are welcome to access the programs and services we offer. We encourage you to give us a call if your child has specific needs, or requirements.
