Following a storm surge and inundation event in June 2026, significant damage occurred to the Gloucester Reserve seawall, promenade and retaining wall, resulting in increased safety and access risks.
Council engaged a coastal engineer to undertake a condition and risk assessment of the site and provide immediate safety advice. The assessment identified that the promenade and retaining wall posed a significant risk due to instability, undermining and ongoing structural deterioration.
As a result, Council was advised that the promenade should remain closed until remedial works were completed.
As a precautionary measure, the promenade pedestrian path was closed on Wednesday 22 July 2026, to allow for further investigations and remedial works to be undertaken.
Council officers, in collaboration with relevant external authorities, will continue to monitor the site and manage the repair works accordingly.
