Fix it, wear it: Fundamentals & essential repairs (workshop one)

Have you got an item of clothing that needs some love? Join Zoe from the School of Sewing and Upcycling for a three-part series of workshops aimed at repairing, adjusting, and finishing your pre-loved garment.

Each workshop covers the following content:

Week 1. Thursday 16 April: Fundamentals & essential repairs

  • Introduction to mending and alteration principles
  • Essential repair techniques: seams, small tears and basic fixes
  • Hems: how to shorten and lengthen hems on garments
  • Practice session: hand and machine mending basics

Week 2. Thursday 23 April: Fastenings & fit adjustments

  • Zippers: repairing or replacing broken zippers
  • Buttonholes and buttons: moving, adding, reinforcing
  • Altering fit: taking in or letting out side seams, waist adjustments
  • Practical exercises on participant garments

Week 3. Thursday 30 April: Creative patching & finishing techniques

  • Visible mending and decorative patching for holes
  • Free-motion darning and hand embroidery methods
  • Finishing techniques for a polished look
  • Q&A + project support and review

Please bring in your own pre-loved garments to mend for this series of workshops. Some materials, needles and sewing basics will also be available on the day, however you should bring the best matched fabric for the best results. Sewing machines will be available for use on the day.

Bookings close 8.30am on day of session.
