Did you know that the fruit netting used in our backyards can have a significant impact on local wildlife?

Join us at Newport Library to discover the fascinating world of Melbourne's flying foxes and microbats, and learn how simple changes in your garden can help protect local wildlife.

Presented by Tamsyn from They Fly By Night Bat Clinic, this talk explores the grey-headed flying foxes seen across Melbourne's west, including their connection to important camps such as Brimbank Park, alongside the microbats that share our urban environment. Learn about the vital role bats play in local ecosystems, the threats they face, and how wildlife-safe fruit netting can prevent injury and entanglement. Following Tamsyn's presentation, a member of Hobsons Bay City Council's Conservation Team will discuss the local benefits of switching to wildlife-safe fruit netting.

As part of the event, you are also welcome to bring along your old or non-compliant fruit netting to swap it with a compliant fruit net. Victoria's Net Swap program was developed to support household fruit growers in replacing unsafe netting and reducing wildlife harm.

Whether you're a gardener, wildlife enthusiast or simply curious about the creatures that visit our neighbourhood after dark, this event offers practical tips and fascinating insights into the wildlife living right alongside us.

Bring along your old fruit netting to participate in the Net Swap. To help as many households as possible, just one free wildlife-safe replacement net will be provided per person. Please indicate your net size to help with stock levels.

Bookings close at 4pm on day of session.
