National Sustainable Living Festival in Hobsons Bay

February 2021

Hobsons Bay will again be participating in the Sustainable Living Festival in 2021, bringing a range of workshops and events to the community throughout February.  Join us at the following events:

Nature Strip Planting Expo
11am to 3pm, Saturday 6 February
Truganina Explosives Reserve, 274 Queen Street, Altona

We’re excited to be joining the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre at their World Wetlands Day celebrations!  Visit our stall to find out how you can use your nature strip to give local biodiversity a boost and even help feed your family! Speak to experts about selecting the right indigenous and native plants as well as food-bearing plants for your nature strip.

Local Nature Strip Tour
Saturday, 13 Feb 2021
Various locations in Altona, Williamstown, Spotswood and Newport

Visit some great examples of nature strips across the municipality that have already been planted out!  The property owners will chat about how they made it all happen and answer your questions.  The tour will include examples of nature strips planted out with food plants, native and indigenous plants, ornamentals and a mixture of all of these.  Come and visit all locations or just pop into one or two.

A My Smart Garden online event

Looking for more space to garden? Many councils have guidelines that allow residents to plant out their nature strips to reduce maintenance, create habitat for local plants and animals or grow some food. Join us for an information session on what you can do in Hobsons Bay, with examples, tips and design ideas for a functional, beautiful and low-maintenance nature strip.

Exploring Australian Indigenous Flavours
Wednesday 24 February

Meriam chef, Nornie Bero will share her love of Australian Indigenous ingredients in a talk about how her culture has shaped her cooking and business style. She'll chat about how you can incorporate Indigenous ingredients and flavours into your own home-cooking, giving tips on where to source ingredients and how to grow them in your backyard. Originally from Mer Island in the Torres Strait, Nornie has been a professional chef for over 20 years, and is currently on a mission to make Indigenous herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits part of everyone's kitchen pantry.

World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day can be celebrated twice during the year - once in May, when the majority of migratory waders leave our shores to breed in the northern hemisphere and once in October when we welcome them back to our shores!

Clean Up Australia Day is coming soon - Sunday 7th March 2021. Council encourages the community to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day. Visit the Clean Up Australia website to find out more information or to register in to a clean-up event near you.

My Smart Garden

My Smart Garden is a FREE program that will help you grow food, shelter your home from the sun and wind, create homes for local wildlife, use water wisely and recycle wastes. See the upcoming My Smart Garden workshops in your area and beyond. This website is also chock-full of resources and tips for the sustainably minded community member.
