Newport Lakes

Newport Lakes High Res (90).jpg

Newport Lakes is a bushland oasis created from a former bluestone quarry and rubbish tip site in the middle of busy Newport. The park is a great place for a picnic with family and friends, for a leisurely walk or just to relax in a tranquil bushland setting.

The lakes area of the 33-hectare park has been extensively revegetated using native plants, with over 200 species of plants and 165 species of birds recorded here.

A self-guided nature trail allows you to explore the lakes area at your own pace. The trail is about two kilometres in length and takes approximately 40 minutes. Download a brochure here(PDF, 3MB), or a hard copy is available from the on-site nursery.

BBQs and shaded seating facilities are available on a first-in basis. Bookings are not available.

No fishing allowed in the lake

Fishing is not permitted at Newport Lakes because Newport Lakes is a designated reserve for native flora and fauna and passive activities such as birdwatching, walking, picnics and relaxing.

Fishing can cause unintended environmental impacts including hooks and lines entangling native birds, causing death or harm. If you would like to fish in Hobsons Bay, there are plenty of opportunities around the foreshore and other places such as at The Warmies in Williamstown where you can sit and throw a line in.

Getting there

The park is about one kilometre, or a 15-minute walk, west from Newport Station along Mason Street, Newport.
