Cherry Lake

Cherry Lake is a popular place for both weekend barbecues and daily walks. Take a leisurely stroll around the lake, take the children to the playground, purchase a gelati from the ice cream van or throw in a fishing line, all while taking in the view of the lake. Please note that fishing and canoeing are only permitted in the eastern end of the lake. (between Fresno st and Millers Rd)

 

 

A 3.5 kilometre walking and cycling trail circuits the lake, and takes visitors to the western and northern surrounds which contain interesting salt marsh habitats used by a range of water birds.

 

The lake is home to a range of native birds including pelicans, swans and swamp hens. The Altona Skipper Butterfly finds precious habitat in the stands of Chaffy Saw Sedge at the western end of the lake.

 

Facilities at Cherry Lake include toilets, picnic shelters, barbecues, playground, drinking taps and seating Toilets are located close to Queen Street: follow the road from the car park to the toilets.

Availability of BBQs and sheltered picnic areas is on a first-in basis. Bookings are not available.

 

  

Getting There

Train: Cherry Lake is approximately 15-minutes walk from Altona Station or Seaholme Station.

Cycling: There is an off-road cycle path linking to the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail on the eastern side of Millers Road
