Aussie Bird Count 2025
What is the Aussie Bird Count?
This 20-26 October, Hobsons Bay residents have the chance to take part in one of Australia’s largest citizen science projects—the Aussie Bird Count! Whether you're in your backyard, local park, schoolyard, or strolling along the foreshore, your bird sightings help build a national snapshot of our feathered friends.
Why does it matter?
Birds are excellent indicators of environmental health. By counting them, we learn more about local biodiversity and how urban spaces like Hobsons Bay support native wildlife. Your observations contribute to long-term conservation efforts led by BirdLife Australia.
How do I participate?
Participating is easy and fun:
- Download the Aussie Bird Count app or visit the Birdlife Australia website
- Spend 20 minutes observing birds in one spot
- Record what you see - even if it's just a few species
Not a bird expert? No problem!
The app includes a built-in field guide with images and descriptions to help you identify common species. You’ll be surprised how many birds you already know!
Need help?
If you run into any issues with the app or website, BirdLife Australia offers support via their FAQ page. Or feel free to contact Hobsons Bay City Council—we’re happy to help you get started.
