The BIG Summer Read is here!

Make the summer unforgettable! Keep the pages turning during the holidays to set kids up for success. The Big Summer Read is their passport to adventure, imagination, and pure enjoyment—one book at a time.

The BIG Summer Read is a statewide reading campaign for Victorian children and young people, created by Public Libraries Victoria, and open to ages 0-18. It aims to support literacy by encouraging kids to read for pleasure over the summer holidays.

Registration opens December 1, 2025 and the competition will run from December 1 to January 31, 2026.

Prizes

Early Years prizes aged 0 - 4 years

  • There will be eight prizes awarded in total.
  • One winner will be drawn from each of the eight library sites listed above.
  • Each winner will receive a Big Summer Read Showbag, including a picture book valued at $38.00 each.  

Primary Age prizes aged 5 - 11

  • There will be eight prizes awarded in total.
  • One winner will be drawn from each of the eight library sites listed above.
  • Each winner will receive a Big Summer Read Showbag valued at $29.50 each.

Primary School - Top student prizes

  • There will be one prize available for the top student reader of each primary school in Hobsons Bay City Council.
  • Each winner will receive a Big Summer Read Showbag valued at $29.50 each.

Secondary Age prizes aged 12 - 18

  • There will be eight prizes awarded in total.
  • One winner will be drawn from each of the eight library sites listed above.
  • Each winner will receive a Big Summer Read Showbag including a $60 Prezzee Smart eGift Card valued at $89.50 each. 

Secondary Age - Top student prizes

  • There will be one prize available for the top student reader of each secondary school in Hobsons Bay City Council.
  • Each winner will receive a Big Summer Read Showbag valued at $29.50 each.
