Dear Agnes - 'Agnes and her Forest: An Embodied Conversation'

PIPS (Performance In Public Space)

Saturday's, 11 March, 18 March and 25 March, 12.30pm to 1.30pm

PIPS (Performance In Public Space) is dancer/poet Catherine Magill, and musician/visual artist Vivienne Tate. Together they create collages of sound and movement, text and installation in response to public spaces, their histories, inhabitants, stories both real and imagined, human and non-human.

Composed in real time, the duo presents an embodied recollection of Agnes Dene's 'A Forest for Australia', inter-weaving somatic memory and the emerging moment. Ancient seabed, encroaching salt, she-oaks and red gums, bird calls and seashells inspire the performance, connecting the Agnes Denes 'Forest' to Truganina Explosive Reserve, in a dialogue through time, place and space.

For this project the duo is joined by dancer Caroline Ellis (performing Saturday 18 and 25 March).

Meet in the Conservation Reserve. Some seating will be provided. Performance duration is approximately 30 minutes.

No bookings required.

This event is held as part of the 'Dear Agnes' contemporary public art program featuring site-responsive works by 12 artists and collectives for nine days over three weeks (Friday 10 March – Sunday 26 March 2023) at the Truganina Explosives Reserve, Altona.

The projects artworks and public programming pay homage to local landscape-inspired themes and 'A Forest for Australia' (1998), a land sculpture by one of the world's leading environmental artists, New York-based Agnes Denes at the Greater Western Water site on Queen Street, Altona Meadows.

'Dear Agnes' is presented by Hobsons Bay City Council in partnership with Deakin University, RMIT University and Greater Western Water.
