Dear Agnes - Artist Talks

Come hear from the artists from the 'Dear Agnes' contemporary public art program and learn more about their practice and their inspiration. Please meet each artist at their artwork site unless specified otherwise.

 

Friday 10 March

1pm - David Murphy - 'Dear Agnes…..Love, David'

David will set up two recent works in the gardens of the Explosives Reserve to discuss how maths underpins much of his work and ideas in much the same way as it does in Agnes Denes’s art and in her “visual philosophy”.

David Murphy is a Melbourne/Naarm-based visual artist and designer who strives to create work that evokes a sense of wonder and joy using eclectic and wide-ranging sources of inspiration.  His ideas often explore where art, mathematics and science intersect with the natural world. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Painting (RMIT) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Sculpture (VCA).

2pm - Dr Michelle Cox - 'Rare Banksia Circles'

Join Michelle for a short artist talk followed by a 45-minute curve stitching workshop in the marquee, using circle templates in your choice of colours. Michelle will add curve-stitched circles to the sculptural installation.

As both a scientist and an artist, Dr Michelle Cox brings a unique perspective to her sculptural work which includes geometrical forms, a love of the environment and nature as well as a playful quality. Michelle is inspired by geometry, the environment, rare or unusual Banksia flower and brings this into her sculptural installation project for ‘Dear Agnes’ which includes plant sculptures of wire and beads, as well as geometrical curve stitching over circular forms.

3pm – Chispa Flaskas - 'A Future Forest for Western Melbourne' 

Chispa will be discussing the possible futures for Western Melbourne’s natural landscapes and plant ecologies in the face of increased climate unpredictability.

Chispa Flaskas is a Melbourne-based artist who uses the public realm to stage site-specific, participatory and digital artworks. Chispa uses her art to explore the environmental and social issues facing our human and non-human urban dwellers.

4pm – PIPS (Performance in Public Space) - Catherine Magill and Vivienne Tate - 'Fens Laboratories'

PIPS (Performance in Public Space) is Catherine Magill and Vivienne Tate. The duo creates collages of sound and movement, text, and site responsive work.

5pm – Ana Sanchez - 'Cutting down a tree for a coffin'

Ana will talk about the work she has carried out behind the construction of the coffin and will say a few words in memory of these trees.

Ana Sanchez uses her art to communicate her positions in critical situations. Through her work, she seeks to raise awareness and talk about both global and personal problems through installations, interventions, and multiple media.

1pm - Meg Stewart – Snoad, Natasha Gardos - 'Always in the In-between'

Join 'Deakin Creative Arts Collective'; Natasha Gardos and Meg Stewart-Snoad for a discussion of ‘Always in the In-between’, where they provide insights into the work and the group's journey from inspiration to installation.

‘Deakin Creative Arts Collective’ brings together the art practices of Natasha Gardos, Ainslie Peverell, and Meg Stewart-Snoad.

Natasha Gardos is a Melbourne-based visual artist, working across painting, printmaking, sculpture, and installation.

Ainslie is a project-based artist with a focus on video, photography, sound, and installation.

Meg is a multi-disciplinary Geelong-based artist, working across drawing, sculpture, painting, photography, and film.

2pm - James Price - 'An illustrated guide to uncertainty, as told to the trees.'

A skilled storyteller, James Price’s artistic practice employs a distinct, vibrant graphic language that reflects on the complexities and contradictions of our times. An accomplished public artist, Price has created site specific installations and sculptures, moving image commissions, and murals for communities across Australia.

Friday 24 March

1pm - Jessica Phillips - 'Viewer'

Jessica Phillips (she/they) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and RMIT Fine Art Honours student working and living in Naarm, Melbourne. They are interested in how the digital impacts expressions of identity, interpersonal relationships, and connection to the natural world. Jessica’s research informs her chosen medium, with some of her most recent projects utilising darkroom photography, sculpture, video installation, and AI artworks.

2pm - Caleb Hardy - 'Recordings of 'Viewer'

Caleb Hardy is a Deakin Bachelor of Arts graduate having majored in Visual Arts and completed minors in Film, TV & Animation and Media Studies. His background in film has informed the foundation of his art practice to take a pluralist approach to engage with an array of subject matters and topics through the lens of digital and video art mediums interspliced with mixed media.

3pm - Amal Laala - 'Roots in a Miracle'

* Meet at the artists installation

Go on a journey with artist Amal Laala to discuss her works, the creative process and personal stories that are at the core.

A socially engaged artist Amal Laala deals with multiple; identities, cultures and languages, delicately exploring ways of communicating subversive content through story to activate dialogues around current socio-political and cultural issues.

4pm - 'Overlapping Collective' - Forest Keegel and Annee Miron - 'Fens Laboratories'

* Meet at rear of the Under Keepers Cottage

Forest and Annee will talk about the process of developing the ‘Fens Laboratory’ and share their learnings from walks with others.

* Meet at the rear of Underkeeper’s Cottage 5 minutes prior to departure
 
Join Annee and Forest from ‘Overlapping Collective’ for an artist led walk to explore the wetlands around Truganina Explosives Reserve.
 
Dress for weather conditions, bring a hat, sunscreen, and water bottle. 
The walks are rated easy.
 
‘Overlapping Collective’ is named for the intersections of Miron’s and Keegel's art practice with the knowledge and experience of others.

2pm - Autumn Tansey -'Deconstructed Labyrinth in 9 Pieces'

* Meet at the front gate of Truganina Reserve

Discover spirals and labyrinths, irrigation and rafts with artist Autumn Tansey and labyrinth facilitator Christina Rowntree, before an invitation to walk the path of a deconstructed labyrinth.

Autumn Tansey is a conceptual artist and emerging curator with a multidisciplinary practice. Autumn explores environmental themes throughout her practice, creating site-specific installations and imagery in response to time, space and history.
