Hobsons Bay City Council is committed to keeping our streets clean, safe and welcoming for everyone. Our street sweeping service plays a vital role in maintaining the appearance of our streets, supporting our drainage systems, and protecting our environment.
Our street sweeping program
Council provides a street sweeping program on an eight-week cycle, ensuring that all residential and industrial streets across the municipality are regularly maintained. The municipality is divided into three sweeping zones, with each zone covered during this cycle.
In addition to routine sweeping, we prioritise high-profile areas like shopping precincts and foreshore zones with daily sweeping, including footpaths, to maintain a clean and accessible public environment.
Our sweepers typically operate:
- weekdays: from 4am, sweepers start in high-traffic areas before moving into the residential and industrial zones. Reactive requests are also actioned throughout the day.
- weekends: an overnight service runs from 12pm to 4am, focused on busy areas to reduce disruption.

Below is a dashboard to make it easier for the community to find out when their street was last swept and when it's due for its next sweep.
The green lines indicate the streets that have been swept within the current eight-week cycle, and the red streets show streets that are yet to be swept within the current cycle (a legend is available in the top right-hand corner of map).
Residents can simply type in their street name or zoom in on the interactive map to get live information. This tool provides greater transparency and helps residents stay informed about street maintenance in their area.

Autumn leaf collection service
Each year during autumn, Council provides a targeted leaf collection service in select streets within specific residential areas with a high concentration of mature trees. In most of these areas, standard sweepers cannot adequately access kerb and channel drains, so we deliver a focused program to manage heavy leaf fall. This dedicated service operates Monday to Friday, with each day focused on a specific street:
- Monday: Electra Street
- Tuesday: Pascoe Street
- Wednesday: Cecil Street and Aitken Street
- Thursday: Melbourne road (Southern end) and Parker Street
- Friday: Action reactive requests along with completing Nelson place, Hanmer Street and Kanowna Street
This program is indictive and subject to change due to a range of factors that may include weather and temporary resource availability. This service helps prevent blocked drains and maintain a safe, tidy environment.
