Careers selection process

Following the application close date, all applications will be reviewed for short listing. Successful applicants will be invited for an interview, usually within a few weeks of the closing date.

 Applying for an advertised position

When considering applying for a position with Hobsons Bay City Council it is important to read the Position Description relevant to the position you wish to apply for.

Your application must include the following mandatory information:

  • a covering letter including the title of the position you are applying for and position reference number. The letter should also state a contact number during business hours
  • an up to date resume including personal details, employment history including current position and prior experience, qualifications and details of referees (must include current employer, if applicable)

Applications are only accepted in response to advertised vacant positions. Unsolicited applications due to privacy implications will not be retained by Council.

Sending your Application

All applications need to arrive before the closing date, as stated in the advertisement for the position. Applications are dealt with in the strictest confidence and in accordance with the Information Privacy Act. Details contained in your application will not be conveyed to any person not directly connected with processing your application without your permission.

The interview

Applicants will be interviewed by three employees from Council. The panel usually includes the manager or supervisor, a member of the team in a similar or senior role to the vacant position and one other person from the Council. Interviews take approximately 45 minutes to an hour and will draw on behavioural-based interviewing techniques. Senior positions and other applicable positions within Council may be required to undertake psychometric testing.

Proof of qualifications

Offers of employment are on the condition that the successful applicant provides original or certified copies of all relevant qualifications. A photocopy of these qualifications will be made and kept on the employee's personnel file.

Police checks

Applicants may be required to undergo a police check prior to commencement of their position, depending on the nature of the role.

Working with children checks

All applicants who work in children related positions, or who supervise those roles, must hold a current Working With Children (WWC) Check card.

Pre-employment medical/pre-existing illness

Applicants may be asked to undergo a medical assessment that will relate to skills required within the relevant position. 

Probationary period

All new permanent employees will be required to complete a six month probationary period before their employment status can be confirmed as permanent. The requirement for a probationary period will be stated in the position description and is also included in the letter of offer.
