Councillor support & expenses
The Local Government Act 2020 (The Act) provides for the payment of an annual allowance to the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and Councillors. The annual allowances are reviewed and determined by Council following a General Council Election and are then reviewed annually by the Minister for Local Government. Effective from 10 August 2021 the annual allowance for the Mayor of Hobsons Bay is $81,204 per annum and for all other Councillors is $26,245.
The Act also prescribes an additional payment to the Mayor and Councillors equivalent to the superannuation guarantee that may be paid to the Councillor as either an addition to their allowance or paid into their nominated superannuation fund (at the discretion of the Councillor).
Section 40 of the Act requires Council to adopt and maintain an expenses policy in relation to the reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for Councillors and members of Delegated Committees.
The Hobsons Bay Councillor Support and Expenses Policy(PDF, 374KB) was developed to assist the Mayor and Councillors in understanding the administrative support, resources and facilities available to assist them perform their duties, and describes the out-of-pocket expenses that may be reimbursed.
