Allowances

The Local Government Act 2020 (The Act) provides for the payment of an annual allowance to the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and Councillors in accordance with a Determination of the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal.

The current annual allowance values (effective 18 December 2022) set by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal for the Mayor of Hobsons Bay is $100,637, the Deputy Mayor is $50,319 and for all other Councillors is $31,353.

The Act also prescribes an additional payment to the Mayor and Councillors equivalent to the superannuation guarantee that may be paid to the Councillor as either an addition to their allowance or paid into their nominated superannuation fund (at the discretion of the Councillor).

Expenses

Section 41 of the Act requires Council to adopt and maintain an expenses policy in relation to the reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for Councillors and members of Delegated Committees.

The Hobsons Bay Councillor Support and Expenses Policy(PDF, 374KB) was developed to assist the Mayor and Councillors in understanding the administrative support, resources and facilities available to assist them perform their duties, and describes the out-of-pocket expenses that may be reimbursed.

Details of individual net Councillor expenditure will be updated and made available on Council’s website monthly.

Councillor expenses incurred during the current Council term (2020-2024) are publicly available on the Council website. The register of Councillor expenses prior to 2020 is available upon request.
