Bushfire

Hobsons Bay City Council is not located in a bushfire prone area. However, smoke from a bushfire or industrial fire may result in poor air quality leading to potential breathing difficulties. In this instance, you will need to be prepared and consider what actions to take.

You may also be holidaying in bushfire prone areas this summer. We encourage you to consider your emergency safety plans and importantly, to assist relatives, friends or neighbours to plan ahead.

Be fire ready this summer. Remember:

  • fires can start and move quickly. It is essential to be aware of what is happening in your area
  • it is critical for your safety to use more than one source for warnings
  • on high-risk days, monitor the conditions around you
  • get the most up-to-date information through the CFA website, the FireReady App, CFA's social media channels such as facebook and twitter, local radio or the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667
  • be prepared to leave early and plan where you are going
  • pack a relocation kit including a back-up battery radio, medication, water and a torch

Sources of emergency information

Information about current and forecast conditions is available from a variety of media sources, including radio, television, and the internet. Agencies such as the Bureau of Meteorology, the Victoria State Emergency Service, fire services and Victoria Police monitor forecast hazards and provide advice and warnings.

VicEmergency website and app is a single all-emergencies website for Victoria. It is Victoria’s primary website for incident information and warnings. VicEmergency displays a real-time map with incidents across Victoria including fires, floods, storms, power outages, hazardous material incidents and traffic incidents. The site also includes information from the Environment Protection Authority and the Chief Health Officer.

The VicEmergency app can be downloaded to mobile devices. The app allows users to create a location-based profile to access official emergency-related warnings and information.

Bureau of Meteorology website and app (BOM) has up-to-date information on local weather conditions, including fire weather warnings and public fire danger rating tables that forecast four days of fire danger ratings.

Country Fire Authority (CFA) website has up-to-date information on local fire danger ratings, total fire bans and forecast Catastrophic fire danger days.

Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) website, radio and app and other local media are also important sources of information during emergencies. Official emergency broadcasters broadcast emergency warnings and alerts relevant to local areas on a range of frequencies across Victoria.
