Doug Grant Foreshore / Laverton Creek Sandy Spit

doug grant

Laverton Creek enters Port Phillip Bay adjacent to Altona Beach bordered by Doug Grant Reserve and Apex Park on one side and Truganina Park and neighbouring Sandy Spit on the other. Both sides are accessible to pedestrians and push bikes, although access on the south side is limited to only a section of the creek.

The foreshore is significant for its abundance of birdlife. Up to 19 migratory bird species who make the journey over from Alaska and Siberia each Spring have been sighted in the area. This is along with numerous resident species who live in the area all year round. Find out more about the birds that have been sighted in the area.

Although it's very tempting to cross the creek mouth to the Sandy Spit we do ask that people do not do this due to their impact on the resting and nesting shorebirds. Interpretative signage is in place for this purpose.
