So'otaga (Connection)

Leilani Fuimaono

25 January to 1 July 2024

So’otaga (Connection) by multidisciplinary artist Leilani Fuimaono is a visual ‘love letter’ exchange with Fuimaono’s LGBTQIA+ Pasifika family, friends and community.

Through a curated selection of portraits taken over seven years, So’otaga (Connection) explores themes of belonging, community and connection within the Pacific Islander and Māori diaspora present in Melbourne and Melbourne's western suburbs and invites viewers to reflect on their personal experience of community, belonging and cultural identity.

Through the presentation of existing and new works, So’otaga, meaning “connection” or “bond” in Samoan, investigates the depths of intimacy and alienation that can arise when attempting to share space in intersecting micro-communities.  In this exhibition, Fuimaono also seeks to depict the culturally inherited elegance and grace of Pasifika and Maori LGBTIQA+ people, and the immense pride, love and respect community members have for their cultures, heritage and island homes.

About the artist

Leilani Fuimaono is a Samoan-Australian multidisciplinary artist working primarily in photography, film and sculpture. Their work often explores themes of grief, belonging/not belonging, and deconstructing notions of identity and community.
