Newport String Quartet.jpg

Saturday 11 March, 2pm to 3pm

Bring a picnic and a rug and soak up harmonic classical music with the ‘Newport String Quartet’.

‘Newport String Quartet’ is a wonderful and local string quartet that has been playing for community events since 2008.  The group is led by Moira Yffer who has played with many professional and community orchestras in the UK, New Zealand and here in Melbourne.

Michael Stewart (2nd Violin) is the founder of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club.  Nicola Johnson (Viola) has played in groups in Australia and New Zealand and Richard McNeill (cello) is a local writer and emerging composer for 'Newport Strings'.

This event is held as part of the 'Dear Agnes' contemporary public art program featuring site-responsive works by 12 artists and collectives for nine days over three weeks (Friday 10 March – Sunday 26 March 2023) at the Truganina Explosives Reserve, Altona.

The projects artworks and public programming pay homage to local landscape-inspired themes and 'A Forest for Australia' (1998), a land sculpture by one of the world's leading environmental artists, New York-based Agnes Denes at the Greater Western Water site on Queen Street, Altona Meadows.

'Dear Agnes' is presented by Hobsons Bay City Council in partnership with Deakin University, RMIT University and Greater Western Water.
