Saturday recyclables drop offs at Operations Centre
Council has implemented interim recyclables drop offs for Hobsons Bay residents weekly on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm at the Hobsons Bay City Council Operations Centre, Sugar Gum Drive in Altona.
The drop offs follow the temporary closure of SKM, Council’s recycling contractors, which has resulted in recycling collected through Council’s household collection service going to landfill. It is an interim measure while a longer term recycling option is resolved.
Council has put arrangements in place for Hobsons Bay’s recyclables collected at the Saturday drop offs to be recycled and not go to landfill.
Most household recyclable material will be accepted at the drop offs. Residents are asked to pre-sort and separate their recyclables into two skip bins: 1. Glass and 2. Paper / plastic / cans.
Recyclables that will be accepted in the paper / plastic / cans bin include:
- Plastics eg PET soft drink bottles, milk bottles, shampoo bottles, detergent bottles
- Paper, magazines, newspapers
- Aluminium and steel cans
Recyclables that will NOT be accepted include:
- Plastic food containers eg ice cream / yogurt / margarine containers
- Soft plastics eg plastic shopping bags, bread bags
- Waxed cardboard
Traffic management and Council staff will be on site to direct and assist residents with the placement of their recyclables into the two signed skip bins.
Registrations are not required and all residents are welcome to drop off their recyclable items any time between 8am and 2pm.
Council has been working hard on short, medium and long term solutions in partnership with a range of stakeholders and levels of government and we will continue to keep our community informed as we progress.
What can residents do?
If you are unable to attend one of the Saturday drop offs, Council is encouraging residents whose bins are not full to give their recycling collection a miss and store their recyclables.
Taking soft plastics to drop off points at Coles and Woolworths supermarkets for recycling is also another way to keep recycling during these uncertain times.
To create more room in your recycling bin, squash your plastic bottles and aluminium and steel cans and paper and cardboard.
Hobsons Bay residents can also try to minimise the amount of waste they produce in the first place by shopping smart and avoiding unnecessary packaging. Using reusable drink bottles, bags and coffee cups are great ways to start.
You could also take your paper and cardboard to One Paper at 32 Plummer Road, Laverton North. Paper and cardboard takes up most of the room in an average household recycling bin so dropping this off to One Paper will allow more room for things like bottles and cans.
One Paper accepts paper and cardboard Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm. Visitors must report to their office and will be directed where the paper and cardboard can be placed.

How do I bring the items to the drop off event?
Glass must be kept separate from the rest of the accepted recyclables, so please bring glass bottles and jars in a separate container. The reason for the separation is the company we have organised to accept and process the recyclables at the drop off event, Australian Paper Recovery, manages glass and the other recyclables in a different way than SKM Recycling does. Broken glass can reduce the quality of the other recyclables that Australian Paper Recovery accept, particularly the paper and cardboard. Keeping glass separate improves the quality of the other recyclables, for the recyclables turned into useful products.
Do I need to pre-register before attending?
No. You can bring your recyclable items any time between 8am and 2pm.
Will the items I take to the Operations Centre be going to landfill?
No. Council have partnered with Australian Paper Recovery to recycle the items accepted at the drop off events.
Why is not all types of household recyclables that is accepted in the yellow recycling bin not accepted at the drop off event?
The company we have organised to accept and process the recyclables at the drop off event, Australian Paper Recovery, accepts certain types of recyclables. This is different to what SKM Recycling, Council’s recycling contractor or other main recycling processors accept.
Can my recycling bin be collected by Council and taken to Australian Paper Recovery for recycling?

This is different to what SKM Recycling, Council’s recycling contractor, or other main recycling processors accept.
Australian Paper Recovery are also unable to manage the amount of recyclables collected from every household.
We are providing these drop off events as an interim option for those that want to avoid landfilling.
