Council's recycling collection update March 2019
Council has been advised by SKM Recycling and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) that SKM has now resumed the processing of Council’s kerbside recycling material.
We would like to thank our community for their patience over the last couple of weeks while SKM has been bringing their sites to a state of EPA compliance, following their temporary closures.
This great news means our community can now get back to their good recycling habits. To refresh yourself on what is accepted and not accepted in your recycling bin, visit our website at: https://www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/Services/Waste-Recycling/Recycling/Recycling-bins
Some residents may have been collecting recyclable materials and storing them for later recycling. Please remember to flatten your items before placing them in the bin to allow for more space.
Council is working with SKM Recycling, the EPA and the Victorian Government on long term solutions and contingencies to prevent future disruptions to Council’s recycling services.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the collected recyclable material being sent to landfill?
No, the collected recyclable material is no longer being sent to landfill. As of 13 March 2019, all collected recyclable material is now being recycled.
When will my recycling bin be collected?
Recycling bins will be collected as normal on your usual recycling collection day.
You can find out your bin collection days here: https://www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/Services/Waste-Recycling/Waste-recycling-calendar
Why did SKM Recycling stop receiving and processing recyclables?
On 15 February 2019, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) ordered Council's recycling contractor, SKM Recycling, to stop receiving recyclable materials at their Coolaroo and Laverton North sites until they were able to meet EPA requirements. On 12 March 2019, SKM Recycling met the EPA conditions and resumed the processing of Council’s kerbside recycling.
Why did this happen?
In February 2019, the EPA visited SKM Recycling’s sites and observed large stockpiles of recyclable waste materials from kerbside collections, which they believed to be a fire risk and a risk to human health. The health and safety of the community was the priority.
As a result, the EPA ordered SKM Recycling to stop receiving any more recyclable materials until this was resolved. This situation has now been resolved and recycling is back to normal.
I have been collecting all my recycling, will there be extra collections?
Unfortunately, Council is unable to provide extra recycling collections. At this time, we don’t have access to enough collection vehicles or staff to undertake this task. Council encourages residents to gradually recycle the collected materials in your recycling bins over the coming weeks. We understand this may be an inconvenience, but we encourage residents to flatten items before placing them in the bin to allow for more space.
What if this happens again?
Council is working with SKM Recycling, EPA and the Victorian Government on long term solutions and contingencies to prevent future disruptions to Council’s and Victoria’s recycling services.
