Students with a flair for the written word are invited to put their pens to paper (or fingertips to keyboard) and be in the running for Write by the Bay, the annual Hobsons Bay Libraries writing competition.

The competition is in its 17th year and open to all young people from prep to year 12 who live or study locally or are Hobsons Bay library members.

Participants are invited to enter a story, poem or song (or one of each) for a chance to receive cash or other great prizes. There is over $2,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs.

The top two entries in each category will be published in a compilation book comprising shortlisted entries from the annual Hobsons Bay Writing and Illustration prizes.

Schools can submit a class entry for the chance to win $500 worth of books for their school library.

Winners will receive their awards at a presentation evening in June attended by acclaimed children’s author and 2018 Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year Andy Griffiths.

Entry forms and conditions of entry are available at all branches of Hobsons Bay Libraries and at libraries.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au. Entry is online through the Hobsons Bay Libraries website at libraries.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

Entries open on Monday 28 January and close on Sunday 28 April. An awards night is on Thursday 6 June. Writing workshops for children will take place during the April school holidays at Hobsons Bay Libraries and will feature special guest authors.

The ‘Write by the Bay’ prize is a project of Hobsons Bay Libraries in partnership with Friends of Williamstown and Newport Libraries and the Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand.
