Better walking and cycling connections, shared paths, reduced speeds, advocacy for improved public transport access, pedestrian safety and footpath reviews are all part of Council’s draft Local Area Movement Plan (LAMP) for the northern pockets of Hobsons Bay.

Following extensive community consultation from November 2020 to January 2021, Council has formed a draft plan that focuses on safe, efficient and accessible transport in Brooklyn, Altona North, Spotswood/South Kingsville, Newport and Williamstown North.

The draft LAMP is a five-year framework to guide Council’s infrastructure planning and implementation to improve the way our community travels through our city on roads, public transport, the cycling network and footpaths. The final LAMP will also be used to advocate to state and federal governments for assistance in maintaining and improving the local transport and traffic network.

Some of the initiatives include:

Brooklyn and Altona North – construct a 3m wide shared path in Ross Road; investigate traffic signals at Millers Road and Eames/Nolan Avenue; introduce speed cushions, raised intersections and safe pedestrian crossings throughout the area; construct stage 4 and 5 of the Kororoit Creek Shared Trail; and a trial pop-up bicycle lane in Millers Road, Brooklyn.

Spotswood and South Kingsville – investigate kerb outstands, road narrowing, street trees, flashing 40km/h speed signs, on-road markings additional pedestrian crossing points in Hudsons Road; construct an overpass across Douglas Parade to connect the Bay Trail; raised pedestrian crossing and intersections in several locations; speed reductions in the west of Spotswood; and new cycling lanes and paths throughout.

Newport and Williamstown North – construct a 2.5m wide shared path in Champion Road to join existing shared path from Market Street to Williamstown North Station; liaising with PTV and the Department of Transport to investigate improvements to the Newport Bus interchange; review footpaths in the Newport Activity Centre; and improve lighting around the Hall Street underpass.

Quotes attributable to Mayor Cr Jonathon Marsden:

“When we asked the community in the northern areas of the city how they currently travel and if they saw any opportunities for improvement, we were given a really great snapshot of peoples’ experiences on the Hobsons Bay transport network.

“All of that feedback has now gone into a draft five-year plan that will see motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users travel more safely and efficiently across Hobsons Bay and beyond.”

Quotes attributable to Deputy Mayor Cr Daria Kellander:

“Our draft LAMP is really important work as it looks at all forms of transport and how they integrate with each other. Insights from our residents and visitors is a vital part of this project.

“Consultation is now open, so let us know if our draft LAMP is in line with your ideas and experiences so that we can keep Hobsons Bay moving in the right direction.”
