Hobsons Bay City Council welcomes the state government’s announcement today that $4.4m has been allocated towards Council’s $12.9m Altona Foreshore Redevelopment project.

The Minister for Local Government, Suburban Development and Veterans the Hon. Shaun Leane announced the funding during a visit to Altona Beach on Wednesday 14 July. An additional $1.4 million was also provided towards the project through DELWP.

The Altona Foreshore Redevelopment will include:

  • upgrading the main beach entry at Altona Pier to improve access, increase shade, vegetation, and coastal habitat and provide drinking fountains, bike hoops, beach showers and public art
  • developing a new pedestrian access ramp at Webb Street
  • developing a new pedestrian access ramp at Mount Street, which will also manage the loss of sand and protect foreshore infrastructure
  • raising sections of the seawall and upgrading the shared trail between Webb Street and Sargood Street along the Esplanade
  • redeveloping a section of Pier Street, Weaver Reserve and the Esplanade to allow for flexible use and enhance the streetscape character

The projects identified within the redevelopment will also have the added benefit of addressing rising sea levels, identifying local coastal processes and hazards and protecting against a changing climate.

The Altona Foreshore Redevelopment will be rolled out in stages with work on Webb Street and Mount Street Pedestrian access ramps starting in September 2021. The entire redevelopment project is expected to be complete by December 2023.

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Jonathon Marsden

“The Altona Foreshore is a much loved and utilised place in Hobsons Bay, and indeed across Melbourne’s west, popular for a range of activities. Even during winter, people find a reason to visit our iconic foreshore.

“The Altona Foreshore represents part of Hobsons Bay’s near 26km coastline. We are proud custodians of the foreshore and work with many government agencies and peak bodies to protect and enhance it for years to come.

“The Altona Foreshore Redevelopment will create flexible public spaces, provide alternative options to access the beach and improve safety and movement for pedestrians and cyclists around the Altona Beach Promenade.

“Council thanks the state government for their generous contribution towards the $12.9m project and I look forward to making the foreshore redevelopment a reality.”
