According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, alcohol is the most widely used drug in Australia, with drinking often associated with socialising and relaxation. However, some groups are consuming alcohol in a risky manner, despite a decrease in per-capita alcohol consumption nationally.

This policy statement aims to mitigate the negative impacts of alcohol by adopting a harm minimisation approach, focusing on demand, supply and harm reduction.
