Altona Beach Precinct

  • Project typeRoads and Streetscape Project

The Esplanade Summer Road Closure is back!

The Esplanade in Altona will be closed to cars from Bent Street to Pier Street from early December 2022 for the summer months as part of the annual Altona Beach Precinct pedestrian only zone. The pedestrian only zone creates a safer environment for pedestrians, reduces hoon driving behaviour and supports Council and police surveillance.

There will be road detours in place and cyclists will be asked to either dismount at the pedestrian safe zone or alternatively follow the road detours or use the shared trail along the beachfront at low speeds.

Parking

If you are looking for an easy parking spot at Altona on the weekends, please consider the car park at the Civic Centre (115 Civic Parade Altona) which is an easy stroll past our great businesses to the beach.

Alcohol, glass, smoking and dogs

Altona is a glass, alcohol and smoking free zone.

Dogs are not permitted on the beach along the Esplanade from 10am to 9.30pm from 1 November to 30 April, dogs must be on leash at all other times.

If you want to take your dog to the beach in Altona, please access the Altona Dog Beach at PA Burns Reserve.

Beach lockers at Altona Beach

To avoid leaving valuables on the beach, lockers are available to hire from Norfolk Café (opposite Altona Beach) seven days a week from 8am to 5.30pm for $5.

Closure of Altona Pier

Parks Victoria has closed part of the Altona Pier to the public for safety reasons. Parks Victoria is in the process of redeveloping the pier which is expected to be completed in 2023.  Click here for more information on the closure of the Altona Pier.
