Hobsons Bay City Council is pleased to announce that a new public toilet will be constructed at Tatman Reserve in Altona Meadows next year.
The new public toilet will bring the reserve up to the standards of other neighbourhood parks throughout Hobsons Bay. This feature was shared as part of community consultation on the draft concept plan for the reserve in 2017 and 2018, however the location of the toilet block had not been confirmed at the time.
The new public toilet will be a single, unisex and accessible unit. It will be located near the playground and barbecue facilities and connect to the main shared path. This is also the most suitable location for ease of access to the sewer system and other services.
With the closest public toilets available 1.7km north-east of Tatman Reserve at D H Graham Reserve, and no access to public toilets along the stretch of the Skeleton Creek Trail between Tatman Reserve and Bruce Comben Reserve, this amenity will also be a welcomed addition for users of the shared trail network.
Community feedback received between 2017 and 2019 has informed many of the features incorporated into the upgrade of the reserve, including:
- new playground equipment including a universally accessible flying fox
- a half-court basketball court
- a barbecue with picnic settings and shelter
- bike racks
- drinking fountain
- concrete pathways
- tree planting and landscaping works

As part of the open space upgrades, a drop-in-session for the Tatman Reserve upgrade took place on 16 December 2017 where Council officers met with local residents about their ideas on improving the park.
Following this, a shared vision and draft concept plan for the future park improvements was developed, in consultation with the community. To view a copy of the draft concept plan, click here(PDF, 642KB).
A staged approach has been undertaken to complete these works. In 2018, the Tatman Reserve stage one upgrade works included a play space upgrade, barbecue with seating, picnic shelter, bike racks and a drinking fountain.
Works on stage two of the upgrade were completed in July 2019 and included the installation of a universally accessible flying fox, extension to the shared concrete path, a half basketball court and new tree planting.
The upgrades to Tatman Reserve were celebrated and enjoyed by the broader community during a play space opening event in October 2019.
