Foreshore Protection Works

Over the past 10 years our foreshore has increasingly taken a beating from storm and wave surges, king and high tides and strong winds impacting on community and residential foreshore infrastructure.

With the increasing storm frequency and intensity comes flooding and damage. We have seen our foreshore open space inundated with sea water, large sections of the coastal trail damaged by water and have had to close a number of pedestrian beach access ramps due to structural damage.

After significant investigation and mapping in recent years, Council has developed a ten year plan for these works that will meet State Government requirements, best practice standards and approvals. A number of the projects along the foreshore have already been delivered in previous financial years.

These projects include:

  • Altona beach renourishment – sand deliveries
  • the removal of the damaged pedestrian access ramps at Correa Street and the access point at Surf Street
  • the building of the rock revetment and pedestrian beach access point at Cresser Reserve to prevent ongoing erosion, loss of foreshore land and the rebuilding of collapsed and undermined sections of the coastal trail.
  • the vehicle access ramp at McBain Street

Further to the works outlined above, Council is investing in foreshore works to safeguard the foreshore at Altona and Seaholme from the expected effects of climate change.

Works included in the foreshore project are:

  • the PA Burns Reserve and the Altona Dog Beach Concept plan is also included in the proposed improvements to our foreshore

These works will offer some valuable recreational features, as well as the highest possible standard in community safety in our public and private foreshore areas.
