Altona Sports Centre
Home to over 30 clubs and 6000+ registered participants, the Altona Sports Centre is Hobsons Bay's netball and basketball hub. Located within HD Graham Reserve, Altona Meadows, the Sports Centre was initially constructed in the 1980s and extended in 2008. It currently has six indoor basketball/netball courts, two outdoor netball courts in addition to amenities, meetings rooms, kiosk and nearby parking.
In 2016 Council has undertaken a feasibility study to investigate the Centre's user needs and facility requirements, to help Council shape its plan for the future of the facility. This included an extensive community consultation process that included over 600 responses from users of the Altona Sports Centre, in addition to direct consultation with sporting associations and other stakeholders. It is fantastic to see that the Centre is supported by such an active and passionate community.

The outcome of the study identified that a four court expansion of the Altona Sport Centre addresses current unmet and future expansion demands.
A four court expansion of the Altona Sports Centre meets the needs of the Hobsons Bay community and will also provide an important service to the wider community in adjoining municipalities.
In 2018, Council was successful in receiving $3 million from the Victorian Government's Better Indoor Stadium Fund and has been identified as a priority action for Council as part of the Capital Works Program for 2019-20.

Council is currently undertaking the Altona Sports Centre Extension project within HD Graham Reserve in Altona Meadows. More recently, an independent soil assessor was appointed to test the soil in the area where the new netball courts are being constructed.
This location is adjacent to the existing tennis courts in HD Graham Reserve. Traces of low risk asbestos have been located in the soil and this area is currently fenced off, restricting public access. Council is immediately treating and remediating the site, in accordance with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and WorkSafe guidelines. Throughout the removal of this asbestos, air monitoring will be undertaken by a qualified independent inspector. Also, in accordance with relevant guidelines, the contaminated material will be placed into EPA approved bins by a qualified asbestos hygienist and transported to a certified disposal site. Signage informing the community is also located onsite.
The removal of the contamination will commence on Monday 14 October 2019 and is expected to be completed within 10 business days.
