“To the man who owned size 7&1/2 hush puppies,
I have walked a mile in your shoes and still feel confused about you… and me, I guess.”
Ode to Hand-Me-Down Clothes is a celebration of the clothes that stumbled into your life through other people. Curated by The Penny Mint, this exhibition will showcase the stories behind the hand-me-downs in our lives; you’ll find poetry, open letters, fiction and ramblings alongside the clothes themselves.
Whether it’s that scarf you stole from your mum, that awesome Savers find or the clothes your cousin always passed down: our belongings have so many stories, and now’s your chance to explore them. The Joel Gallery is open 10am to 5pm daily. Entry is free, or join us on Monday 2 September for our launch event featuring local talent ($10 entry to launch event, but no one turned away for lack of funds) Want to submit a piece to the exhibition?
On Saturday 10 August we’ll be at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, Altona to collect your submissions. Need time (and the will against procrastination) to write? We have you covered! We’ll also be running a writing bee from 11am to 5pm, so bring your item of clothing along to create your piece and drop them both off in the same day! And don’t worry, we’ll return your clothing safe and sound at the end of the exhibition!
