Manufactured Underwater

My body is a swimming pool

a pebble with a heartbeat slips in

da-donk, da-donk, da-donk, da-donk, da-donk, da-donk, da-donk, da-donk, da-da donk

a muffled jellyfish echo through

the water they dream

as though awake

Manufactured Underwater by Briony Galligan is a series of drawing works that spirals between children’s toys and ideas of gestation. The work uses hand drawn graphics that reference the gyroscope and spinning top, as well as the spirograph and basic geometry sets; tools that children often use to learn, draw and navigate the unknown. This is combined with personal texts and ideas from queer theory about the potential and excess of gestation to move towards a spinning and ambiguous watery creatureliness of early childhood.

The exhibition is on display at Laneway Gallery, an outdoor exhibition space at Woods Street Arts Space in Laverton, Saturday 3 December to Tuesday 28 February 2022.

A selection of works will also be on display at the Altona Civic Centre, Altona.

About the artist

Briony Galligan (she/her) lives and works on Wurundjeri and Boon wurrung land and pays respects to Elders Past, Present and Emerging. Briony positions sculptural and drawing objects as conduits within her work. She imagines objects as appendages, physical and psychic connection points between human and animal experience, between subjects and fixed positions. Her work addresses histories of childhood and play, mortality and embodied experiences, the tension between what can be held up and remembered and what collapses. Her sculptural work often uses physical suspension: curtains hang above the ground, cones are suspended, shelves of felt hold themselves up. She also works with drawing as a way of shifting between ideas. Collaboratively, Briony works with Mel Deerson on discursive performance, drawing, video and installation. Together they research the intersections of desire and control at various sites – from an underwear and wire fencing factory in Melbourne’s CBD, to Dante’s hell, to rainbows and angels. Briony is a sessional academic at Monash University and Victorian College of the Arts and was a collective member at TCB artist-run space (2017-21).
