Melbourne Fringe presents Deadly Fringe
The Melbourne Fringe festival (12 to 29 September) is coming to Hobsons Bay with two exciting events as part of Fringe Westside.
Hobsons Bay City Council is proud to be part of Deadly Fringe 2019 which focuses on visual arts and increasing participation by, and representation of, First Nations artists and community. Together with the Koorie Heritage Trust, the new Deadly Fringe visual arts program includes two free Hobsons Bay events:
10 to 29 September
The Substation, 1 Market Street, Newport
Current is a video projection work at The Substation by artist Pierra Van Sparkes, a Pibbulman woman based on Kulin country. "My mother and I make tea in my nan's old crockery, items passing between hands and in and out of frame as they move between us. Up and down the hills and valleys we go, grateful guests on beautiful Taungurung country we've called home for all these years. Unmoved and shaken up, you hold us all the same. The brush grows back, old paths are walked again." - Pierra Van Sparkes.

An Assemblage of Memories Workshop
Saturday 21 September, 11am to 3pm
Woods Street Arts Space, 44 Woods Street, Laverton
Free, bookings required
Get practical in this hands-on workshop open to anyone, from budding creative minds to established artists. Using found imagery collected from newspapers and magazines, Gunditjmara woman Hayley Millar-Baker will lead participants through cut-and-paste methods to construct a photographic assemblage of a childhood story (symbolic or literal). Consider how your story is linked to people, places, and experiences from your past and ponder your desires, beliefs, memories and dreams.
