Minions: The Rise of Gru

Long before he becomes the master of evil, Gru (Oscar nominee Steve Carell) is just a 12-year-old boy in 1970s suburbia, plotting to take over the world from his basement.

It’s not going particularly well. When Gru crosses paths with the Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—this unexpected family joins forces. Together, they build their first lair, design their first weapons, and strive to execute their first missions.

FAQs - Movies by the Bay

How much does it cost to attend?

Council’s Celebrate Summer series, including Movies by the Bay events, are free. Everyone is welcome to attend.

What time should I arrive?

The movie will start once it is dark enough to clearly see the movie, approximately 8.45pm to 9pm. This can vary according to the weather. You are welcome to set up early in the evening to find yourself a comfy spot.

What should I bring?

Bring something comfortable to sit on – picnic rugs are easiest; low-seat chairs and bean bags (if you can manage it!) are also fine to bring along. We would recommend something warm to wear for when the temperature drops at night, reusable picnic equipment and water bottles. Please be considerate and leave the park as you found it.

Can I bring my dog/pet?

We recommend that you don’t bring your pets to Movies by the Bay, due to the crowds and loud noise. If you do bring your pets they must be on a leash and suitably restrained at all times. We’d ask that you sit on the periphery for easy entry/exit, and keep in mind that others might feel uncomfortable having an animal nearby. All owners are responsible for picking up after their pet.

Can I smoke at the event?

Movies by the Bay is a smoke free event. For the comfort and safety of others in the park, we’d ask that you don’t smoke in the event area.

Can I bring alcohol to the event?

The consumption of alcohol is prohibited in some public areas of Hobsons Bay, including Commonwealth Reserve where the movie is screened.

Could the event be cancelled and how will I know?

We love to show movies under the stars, but being outdoors we are at the mercy of the elements. In the event of extreme weather – including heat, rain, high winds – the event may be cancelled. It is unsafe to use event equipment in certain conditions, and the health and safety of all is important to us. If an event is cancelled, it will be advertised on Council's social media platforms.
